Romance is...

Approach

Romance is simple to some but complicated to most. Since the definition of romance seems to vary from person to person, the definition that really counts is your partner's. What's their definition of romance?

If you have plenty of time, the answer could be found in the many books and magazines that have been published to date. If you don’t have much time you can simply ask, your partner that is. I know, asking doesn't seem to be in the least bit romantic but it's clearly the shortest path to romance. A discussion about romance is always romantic, if done right.

Try this approach. Find a relaxing time to strike up a easy going conversation, not a debate, about romance. Ask your partner to share their definition of romance. Follow this up by asking for specific activities that they feel are romantic. Once this is done, stifle any desire to debate. Remember romance varies from person to person. Respectfully accept what was said as "their" definition of romance and kindly allow the conversation to progress naturally. Next, after a few days, weeks or months, pick one of their romantic activities and surprise them by doing it. Here is a key point to remember, you must commit fully to the activity. Again, don't debate. If your partner senses any reluctance on your part to participate in the activity, the moment is tainted and back to square one for you. This means it will take some self-control and sacrifice but if you succeed you will be pleasantly surprised with the result.

The interesting thing about romance is that romance begets romance. In other words, the sincere attempts of one partner will lead to sincere attempts on the part of the other. So don't be surprised if your partner wants to know what you consider romantic and reciprocates by doing something that fits "your" definition of romance.

Why we created this book

Some couples need a little help with romance. We created this book as a short and simple alternative to the many lengthy and complicated books and articles that exist on the subject.  This book will make it easier to open up a discussion and make a commitment to romance.  Your collective activities will make up your own definition of romance as a couple.  Using this book each year, possibly on an anniversary, is an easy way to remember and track your romantic progress.  With each passing year you will notice how the two of you have drawn ever closer together.  If you're a newlywed, this a great start to keeping romance in your marriage year after year.

This book is a sturdy 25 page hardback with a linen finish.  It contains the summary text shown above, an "Especially for You" page to write a brief note to the receipient if given as a gift and enough pages to record 20 years of romantic memories.
